Teacher Spotlight – Abigail Titus, Pivot North Bay

Abigail TitusAccording to Pivot North Bay Educational Coordinator Abigail Titus, her favorite part about her work is identifying what will help each individual student succeed. “The best thing for me so far at Pivot has been the focus on finding solutions for students,” Titus says. “There’s a creative, exciting aspect knowing that we can try new things, and that whatever works for an individual student is celebrated.”

Titus is in her second year as an Educational Coordinator at Pivot North Bay, where she works in the middle school program. Born and raised in Ferndale, California, Titus received her BA in Anthropology and Social Justice from St. John’s University in Queens, New York. She returned to Northern California with a goal to make a positive impact in the lives of others through education and joined the teaching profession by entering the Sonoma County Office of Education Intern Teaching Program.

To Titus, Pivot is a special place that can provide an answer for students looking for flexible educational options to meet their individual needs.

“I think it is important for students to know there are options out there. It can be really liberating for some students who haven’t felt that they’ve had a place where they can learn and progress and become successful. We can be that place for students,” Titus says. “Watching someone come in to Pivot who may feel bad about school and then to see them over time feel empowered and feel good about education — that’s why we do what we do..”

When not teaching at Pivot North Bay, Titus enjoys boxing, jiu-jitsu and traveling. Her goal is to visit all 50 U.S. states, and the number of states she has traveled to so far recently hit 28 with a trip to the state of Minnesota.
