On the first Thursday of each month, Pivot San Diego students can be found brightening the lives of senior citizens at The Meridian at Lake San Marcos, a senior living community near the Resource Center.

Launched as a community service project last year, Pivot students spend time each month interacting with residents and assisting with the activities of the day. Although the group of students visiting The Meridian differs by month, many students are recurring participants and enjoy their time interacting with the senior residents.

During the Fall semester, students created Halloween crafts, built gingerbread houses, and played games such as shuffleboard. In the Spring semester, students are looking forward to creating more Valentine’s Day crafts, playing pool, Scrabble and other games.

Educational Coordinator Lyla Chisholm, who is involved in the partnership between The Meridian and Pivot San Diego, says that the “conversations and connections the students make with the senior citizens are really inspiring and fun. It’s rewarding for the students to learn from the elderly; they enjoy their time there.”
