When Makena Imber enrolled at Pivot Charter School San Diego, she was looking for a learning environment that made sense for her. What she found was the flexibility and support to not only stay on track, but to get ahead. Now, she is graduating a year early heading to California State University San Marcos to study forensic science.

Prior to her time at Pivot, Makena faced learning challenges. With the support of Pivot’s personalized structure, including one-on-one support, resources, and guidance, Makena took proactive steps to manage challenges and excel academically through her own dedication and hard work.

Inspired by a fellow student who graduated early, Makena realized she could do the same. With the encouragement of her Education Coordinator, Gail Gonzalez Coloyan, and the support of Pivot’s academic counselor, Luis Portilla, she developed a plan and followed through.

“If you put in the effort, Pivot can open doors and give you a head start on your future—just like it did for me,” she said.

Regular check-ins helped her manage her coursework, stay organized, and balance both high school and college classes. As she prepares to graduate early, Makena encourages other Pivot students to embrace every opportunity available to them.

Pivot is incredibly proud of Makena’s initiative and achievements, and we can’t wait to see all that she accomplishes in the future!
